Amie Ward, with Foundational Training Expert Josh Brigham

Hello everyone! Welcome to our November Balanced Bartender pep talk! This month, we're in Charlotte, NC, to talk with Josh Brigham about the benefits of foundational training for better performance and longevity behind the bar.

Tell us about your journey in the hospitality industry.

I worked in the hospitality industry from age 16-41 at pizza restaurants, bars, and eventually at the Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in beer sales.

How did you become involved with Foundation Training?

I entered the world of Foundation Training after an artificial disc was placed in my neck at age 31. I rolled over asleep in bed when the disc between c6-c7 ruptured, slid into the neural canal, and partially paralyzed my arm. The doctors were able to repair my neck, but they warned of even greater issues in the low back. 90% disc loss, sacrum fusing into L5, and lots of arthritis meant I was going to need fusion surgeries to stabilize the joints in my lumbar spine. After years of pills, PT, traction therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic, and cortisone shots, I stumbled across Foundation Training on a TedTalk. The rest is history.

What inspired you to become a trainer and open up your practice?

After rehabbing myself through Foundation Training, I told everyone about it, but nobody was listening to me. Pain is an interesting phenomenon, we recognize it when others are suffering, but we often feel that our own pain is unique. Rarely would anyone take me seriously when I spoke about my journey out of back pain because I was just some guy saying that I fixed myself. So I got certified to teach it. Then I started pursuing more certifications in the field. Eventually, I ended up teaching full-time.

What has been the impact of Adapt CLT on the Charlotte hospitality community?

Because of my years in the hospitality industry, I was able to teach some classes for the USBG chapter here in Charlotte. I've done some occupational fitness classes at breweries, and I'm looking forward to meeting more folks in the hospitality industry. I'm offering two private sessions for free to the first two service industry folks that DM me when this article releases. That can be in person or on Zoom.

     Josh Brigham

Josh worked in the Charlotte, NC, service industry from the ages of 16 to 41. At 31, he received an artificial disc at c6/c7 due to a rupture. The doctors then made him aware of advanced degeneration of the discs in his lumbar spine. 90% disc loss and the early onset of arthritis forced him to rethink his recreational activities, basic movement patterns, and career. He found his way into sustainable pain relief by discovering Foundation Training. Since 2014 this is the protocol Josh has used to manage his injuries and take himself from a place of pain to performance. He is extremely passionate about sharing this practice and switched careers to teach it because he believes that we all have the inherent ability to heal ourselves if given the right tools. The body is endlessly adaptable!
