How do you find balance between being the owner of multiple bars in NOLA, President of the USBG, a nonprofit board member, husband, and father?
I think the trick for me has been knowing when to take on something new. When you see those people spinning a bunch of plates, it's pretty impressive, but it's all about the timing. You can get a lot of things going all at once, though, if you take enough time to get each one to a stable place before jumping into the next one.
You are DC born and bred, but have chosen NOLA as your home. What makes NOLA so special to you?
I love New Orleans because it feels so free and open. People can really just be themselves down here. DC and NOLA aren't really as different as people might imagine - both are sleepy swamp towns that have a skewed image based on what most tourists see. NOLA's different, though, in that people don't really care what you do for a living. We're more interested in what your passions are: are you in a band? Are you in a Mardi Gras krewe? Are you a Saints superfan? All of that feels more important here than what you do for money.

Would you be so kind as to give us the wellness challenge for the month of July?
In May, I'm challenging myself to see a professional about my foot pain. I've been dealing with soreness (and occasionally worse) in my right foot for a few years now, and I'm past the point of pretending that it'll go away on its own. It's time for me to finally bite the bullet and make an appointment with my doctor.
