Balanced Bartender Pep Talk Aug 2021
Hey Pals, it’s The Healthtender, Amie Ward, with your August Balanced Bartender Pep Talk!
This month while we are grinding out in the heat, I wanted to talk about the babes of our industry. Womxn have held vital roles in the spirits world throughout history. It is no longer uncommon to see them holding court as esteemed bartenders, chefs, beverage directors, managers, owners, writers, ambassadors, brewers, master blenders, distillers, coopers, and more.

Womxn make up more than half of the service industry workforce,
and recent reports from The National Women’s Law Center indicate that these badass humans were disproportionately affected by job losses during the pandemic—especially BIPOC womxn, and womxn with disabilities. As we work to rebuild our community devastated by COVID, industry leaders must develop new systems that ensure equitable spaces and opportunities for those relegated to positions without growth potential. Formalizing non-discriminatory hiring practices, providing fair wages, and implementing mentorship programs for the disenfranchised are just a few of how organizations have committed to disrupting gender and racial inequality.
The visionaries behind the Uncle Nearest Venture Fund, Turning Tables, Lee Initiative, Castell Project, Speed Rack Advisory Squad, and Dame Hall of Fame (certainly not an exhaustive list!) have established pivotal initiatives to combat disparity gaps in our industry. More programs like these are necessary to recognize and nurture the skills and contributions of historically marginalized populations.

Many brilliant womxn have been behind advancements in distillation technology,
flawless spirit expressions, pivotal cocktail programs, and the comprehensive educational curriculum that feeds our hospitable souls. And there are countless pioneers, movers, and shakers we have not even met yet! Now is the time to act swiftly and develop pivotal platforms to usher in the next leaders of our industry.
Thank you all so much for tuning in. Jägermeister and The Healthtender are back with another magical movement challenge, and we are bringing some creative strength training heat to match this blistering summer month! Grab two equally weighted spirits bottles and complete 12-15 repetitions of your favorite type of curl. You are encouraged to complete multiple sets of these curls, and as always, I love to see your time-lapse videos and sweaty selfies. Recipe
- 1.5 parts Jägermeister Cold Brew
- 1.5 parts Lime Cordial
- 2 Dashes Buckspice Gingersnap Bitters
- 6 Mint Leaves + 1 Bouquet for Garnish*
- Brut or Extra Dry Sparkling Wine
Method: Place all ingredients but the sparkles into a shaker tin. Fill with ice and shake until tin gets frosty—strain into a chilled coupe and top with bubbles. Give your mint bouquet a quick smack against the back of your hand and place it over the cocktail. *If you can get your hands on Chocolate Mint, it is a treat in this cocktail. The next runner-up and equally delightful is Pineapple Mint. And you can never go wrong with classic Spearmint.
Inspiration: This month’s recipe pays tribute to Audrey Sanders, the decorated cocktail queen with a knack for revitalizing classics through subtle yet impactful alterations. The Old Cuban is one of my go-to cocktails for guests dipping their toes into the cocktail world. It’s refreshing and just bold enough to get people out of their comfort zones. The substitution of Jägermeister Cold Brew and homemade lime cordial from the traditional ingredients is equal parts curious and inviting!
