Gratitude is the practice of acknowledging the things you receive or experience, not only with your five senses but those that transcend the corporeal world. You won’t be shocked to learn that gratitude has numerous benefits for your mind and body—after all, this is a wellness segment for Bartenders!
Gratitude helps us see the positive in our world, no matter how trivial something may seem. The practice encourages us to recognize when outside influences have contributed to the good we experience, allowing us to forge connections with other awesome humans, nature, or even something on a spiritual level. When we dig down into it a bit deeper, gratitude helps us live in and appreciate the moment, rather than constantly seeking out new ways to make ourselves happy. I’ll spare you the super nerdy research details, but multiple studies have shown that people who practice gratitude are happier compared to those who do not. Subjects aboard the Gratitude Express feel more satisfied in their daily lives, have less severe anxiety and instances of depression, experience higher quality sleep, and feel less fatigued.

If you’d like to give this fancy pants practice of gratitude a shot, there are many simple ways to get started.
Gratitude journaling is a phenomenal way to recall some rad things that have happened. So is writing a quick thank you card. Thank you cards can be both cathartic and help you build a bridge with someone! A quick 5-minute meditation session 1-to- a few times per week can come in super handy, and platforms like Headspace, Calm, and Spotify have oodles of free guided scripts to get you through. If all of that sounds too time-consuming, peep the gratitude piggy bank I implemented as part of my 2021 S.M.A.R.T. Goals. I committed to writing one thing I was grateful for on a post-it note twice monthly and placed it in this old coffee can. When 2022 rolls in, I plan to open that can up and relish those moments all over again.
Thank you all so much for tuning in! Jägermeister and The Healthtender are back with another movement challenge and are happy to be celebrating Planksgiving with y’all this season! Complete 30-60 seconds of your favorite plank variation, take a time-lapse video or sweaty selfie, tag me @thehealthtender, and use the hashtag #jmbehindtheshot for a chance to snag wellness giveaways at the end of the month. Recipe:
- .5 part Jägermeister Cold Brew
- 1 part Rye Whiskey
- .25 part Lemon Juice
- .25 part Smoked Maple Syrup
- 3 Heavy Dashes Walnut Bitters
- Top with dry cider
Method:
Build all ingredients but cider in a tin with ice and give a quick shake. Strain over fresh ice and top with a dry cider (I used the Austin Eastciders Brut).
Amie's Note:
Tasty smoked maple syrups are available for purchase, but if you have access to a meat smoker in your bar or home, you can absolutely play around and make your own delicious creations. This is a dry cocktail as it stands, so feel free to dial up the sweetness via the maple or cider as you see fit!
