Bacteria might seem bizarre, but they are natural and normal.

More than 700 different oral species exist, and at any point in time, there can be upwards of 6 billion germs partying in your trap. Gross? Sure. But bodies are awesomely weird, and our mouths provide ideal environments for them to flourish. Some of these bacteria promote health, but at least 20 strains of malicious microorganisms provoke health problems like heart and lung disease, pneumonia, and hepatitis.

Alcohol plays a scary role in the bacteria balancing act in the service industry, even if you are simply tasting and spitting a libation. Alcohol causes dehydration by temporarily shrinking your salivary glands. No saliva means dry mouth and an inability to wash away bacteria effectively. Alcohol metabolizes into sugar, and bacteria love sugar. Plaque forms on the teeth when bacteria and sugar mix, leading to tartar, cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay.

You can get ahead of these frightening fears with a solid dental hygiene routine.

Aim to brush your teeth and tongue twice a day for 2 minutes with an ADA approved toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. And don’t gloss over the floss! Cleaning in between your teeth helps to dislodge any sneaky food remnants that attract bacteria. Stepping up your hydration game provides countless health benefits and is a perfect way to wash away harmful germs. When imbibing or testing cocktails, ensure you have a glass of water to sip on.

Professional dental cleanings are also essential but don’t fret if you are without insurance. The United Way can direct you to free or reduced-cost dental services in your community, as can your local health department. Dental schools provide quality preventive care at affordable prices. Licensed, experienced dentists closely supervise students, who must record copious training hours before becoming licensed. The National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research also seeks volunteers to participate in research studies, providing limited free or low-cost dental treatment for the unique condition they are studying.

Thank you all so much for tuning in! Jägermeister and The Healthtender are back with another movement challenge, and this month it’s Dia de los Deadbugs! Amie's Snacks & Sips
Unearthly Pumpkin Bites
 Unearthly Pumpkin Bites

Recipe

  • ¼ cup Jägermeister Cold Brew (omit for a spirit-free energy bite)
  • 1 ½ cup Rolled oats
  • ¾ cup Creamy Peanut, Sunflower, Almond, or Cashew Butter
  • ¼ cup Pumpkin Puree
  • 2 tbsp Honey
  • ½ cup Coffee Protein Powder
  • 1 tbsp Ground Chia and Flax Blend
  • 2 tbsp Pumpkin Seeds
  • 2 tbsp Mini Dark Chocolate Chips
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Paste
  • 1 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend
  • Coarsely Ground Sea Salt

Method:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and incorporate with a spoon. If the mixture is runny, incrementally add additional oats, and if the mix is too dense, incrementally add extra puree and honey. Roll into bitesize snacks and sprinkle extra pumpkin seeds and salt over the top. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Should make approximately 15-20 bites.

These tasty bites double as delightful desserts and energy-filled pre-workout snacks (mind the Jägermeister in this case). There are lots of opportunities to customize, so have a ball!
