Tell us about your journey through the hospitality industry.
My journey in the industry started 26 years ago. At a lesbian bar in Milwaukee. I had no clue how to bartend, but I was good with people, so I gave it a try. On my first day I was trained for an hour and then thrown to the wolves. I made about 100 cape cods. I enjoyed it, loved connecting with people. The bar switched to a dance club. I knew then I wanted a small, comfy corner type bar; One that I could be my authentic self and feel comfortable. I found an ad listing a small bar for sale in the Walker’s Point neighborhood. looked at it on my 30th birthday and I decided then this was my path. I put an offer in on it, closed in spring and had the grand opening on Friday July 13th, 2001. Forward 22 ½ years - we're still here. I’ve been very fortunate to have some amazing/talented bartenders and support staff throughout the years. The people that provide entertainment are some of the best. We have great customers coming through for all our events. Someone said once our place isn’t just a bar, it’s a community and I believe that to be true. Although sometimes things are difficult and challenging, overall, It’s been an amazing experience and I’m glad I made the decision 22 years ago to open my own bar.
If you only had one day to spend in your city, what are the top 5 things you must see or do?
If I only had one day to spend in Milwaukee – the things I would want to do are:
1. Milwaukee is a foodie city. We have so many outstanding restaurants. And many of them I am lucky enough to have right in our “back yard”.
2. The Walker’s Point neighborhood is one of a kind. Over my time owning a business there the neighborhood has really built up with new restaurants, bars, condos, and inclusive spaces. It has become so eclectic and is such a great blend of businesses. I would hit up that area for sure. Probably do a bar hop through the neighborhood.
3. For a small market, our sports teams are so fun to watch so I would catch a Bucks, Brewers, or Admirals game.
4. Our festivals are amazing. All summer long there is a festival (or 2) that someone can connect with. With intense winters, we love when it warms up in WI and Our summers are packed full of Music, drinks, and food.
Tell us about your first experience with Jägermeister and your favorite way to consume it today.
First experience with Jägermeister. Jägermeister was one of the first recipes featured at our bar. We have a chilling machine, and we also sell the little Mini Meisters (people love the little bottles). When my friends and I bar hop it’s the shot of choice at our favorite Mexican bar down the road. As soon as we walked in, they started pouring the Jäeger.
Tell us how to have the ‘Best Night of your Life’ in your city from your perspective.
Best Night of your life in MKE - I’d be out with my wife and friends, grab a nice steak dinner, go watch a band or catch a Bucks game, and then Bar hop in the Walker’s Point neighborhood ending at the PINT… of course.
Bet-z Boenning (don’t say the o)
I lived in Milwaukee for over 27 years. My Bar has been there for 22 ½ years *Down time= I love to spend time with my wife & two dogs. I also try and spend as much time as I can with my family. My wife and I also have a 501c3 Non-Profit – the Forward Please Project. We spend time doing events for that.
My service industry journey – from customer, to bartender, to… Owner/Tender/Cleaner/Manager/Therapist/Bouncer/Event planner/People connecter/Fix it person.
My bar has received many awards over our years, from best Karaoke to several community service awards. Best award is still being open & hearing positive feedback from our customers. Cheesy I know but it’s the truth. *Something extra about me: I write children’s books - I have a 6-book series - Olivia the owl. (It’s been a passion project since my time in the Chi Omega Sorority in college - #notyourtypicalsoroitygirl hahaha)
