Cocktail: "Black No. 1"

Recipe:

  • 1 part Jägermeister
  • 1 part VSOP Cognac
  • .5 part Liquid Alchemist Ginger Syrup
  • .75 part Lemon Juice
  • .75 part Pineapple Juice
  • .25 part Simple Syrup

Glass:  Tiki mug

Garnish:  Mint bouquet

Method:  Shaken, crushed ice, tropical mug, mint bouquet for garnish

Hey DDO, what inspired you to create this amazing cocktail?

When it comes to cocktails in Chicago I believe less is more. Use quality ingredients, fresh juice, and add the one thing that sets us apart from the rest of the country, hospitality. We have everything from multi-Michelin starred restaurants to greasy-spoon diners and they all have one thing in common, and that’s hospitality. My philosophy is to keep it fun, keep it fresh, and most importantly, keep it simple.

The Black No. 1 is a refreshing cocktail just in time for the spring and summer. It combines Jägermeister, VSOP Cognac, ginger syrup, lemon juice, and pineapple juice. The inspiration behind this drink is to show people the versatility of Jägermeister and how it can work in tropical cocktails. The baking spice botanicals alongside the pineapple just work. A little bit of spice from the ginger and some rich fruit flavors from the VSOP makes this a perfect drink for any time of day.

Get To Know DDO

After bartending for ten years during the cocktail renaissance in some of Chicago’s most prolific accounts including BOKA and Mercadito, Daniel de Oliveira further developed his expertise through various roles in brand marketing and distributor sales. He spent the last ten years building brands, educating bartenders across the country, and creating memorable cocktail experiences far and wide before accepting the position as Mixologist for Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits of Illinois.

He helps nurture and build the SGWS’ world-class spirits portfolio through education and cocktail creation in his current role. In addition, Daniel is a leader on the front lines helping Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits reinvigorate the essence of community and culture in Chicago’s cocktail and spirits industry.

DDO's Tips & Tricks

Great cocktails come from using quality fresh ingredients, a balance of sweet and sour, building off quality spirits, and many other things. In Chicago, we pride ourselves on hospitality because you can make the best drinks in the world, yet without hospitality first, it doesn't matter. Combing hospitality with great thoughtful cocktails is what Chicago is all about. My tip is to create an environment of hospitality first and mixology second, yet the win-win is when you do both together at a high level.
